Frequently asked questions about employee health insurance

Plain’s business health insurance helps you and your enrolled employees get back to everyday life quickly if you fall ill or are injured. It ensures access to specialists, treatment and advice – without long waiting times.

The insurance covers examination and treatment in Denmark. If you live in the Nordics or Germany, approved treatment with a physiotherapist, chiropractor or psychologist in your country of residence is covered. In special cases, and by agreement, the insurance can cover treatment at a private hospital or specialist clinic in the Nordics, the EU or England if there is no reasonable place of treatment in Denmark.

It’s up to you which employees in the company are offered health insurance. The insurance covers the employees enrolled in the company’s health insurance. We can insure from as little as one employee.

You can calculate your price in a few minutes and get a fixed monthly price per employee. All prices include state taxes, and Plain has no fees.

No, health insurance is not mandatory in Denmark. But it’s a good idea to have if you want to avoid long waiting times and get access to help when you need it. It’s a voluntary option for those who want extra peace of mind and fast access to treatment.

Health insurance is for those who want to avoid waiting times and have access to treatment when they need it. It suits you if you want peace of mind and fast treatment should health problems arise.

Yes, there are a few requirements to get health insurance.

  • You must be resident in Denmark, the Nordics or Germany and be entitled to receive Denmark’s public health benefits, or benefits equivalent to the public health benefits in your country of residence.
  • The insurance can be taken out from age 18–66 and ends when you turn 67.
  • Existing illnesses may be subject to a waiting period – see the question about existing illnesses below.

In many cases you need a doctor’s referral or recommendation before an examination or treatment can begin.

The insurance does not cover, among other things, ordinary dental treatment, cosmetic treatments and vaccinations. You can read more about what is not covered in the policy terms. If in doubt, you’re welcome to contact us.

It depends on how the scheme is set up. If the health insurance is mandatory for employees, there is no waiting period for existing conditions – although you must have been covered for 6 months before addiction treatment is covered. For voluntary schemes and for co-insured family members, there is a 6-month waiting period for existing illnesses and injuries. Chronic illnesses diagnosed before the insurance started are generally not covered, but can receive treatment under the cover for chronic conditions, which is always included with Plain.

Plain’s health insurance covers both work-related and private treatment needs, and the premium is split into a work-related part and a leisure part. The work-related part is tax-free for the employee. The leisure part is a taxable staff benefit and must be reported on an ongoing basis as A-income in eIndkomst (box 26) when the company pays. The exact split between the work-related and leisure parts is shown on the policy in Plain. You can read more about the rules and the different tax models in our article on how health insurance is taxed.
