Recourse

Recourse (also called subrogation; in Danish, regres) is the insurer’s right to recover compensation it has paid from whoever is responsible for the loss. Once your insurer has paid your claim, it takes over your claim against the party at fault. Recourse doesn’t affect your payout – it moves the bill to the responsible party.

Examples

A tradesperson causes water damage in your shop. Your insurer pays for the damage and then recovers the money from the tradesperson’s liability insurance.
