Depreciation

Depreciation is the deduction an insurer makes from compensation to reflect an item’s age and wear. It is often calculated using fixed annual rates set out in the terms. Depreciation is why compensation at actual cash value is lower than replacement value.

Examples

If IT equipment depreciates by 20% a year, you’ll be paid 40% of the new price for a three-year-old monitor.
